The City of St. John’s is pleased to announce that it has earmarked $1 million towards the revitalization of Victoria Park, one of the city’s oldest and most historic spaces.

Opened in 1890, Victoria Park is located in the west end of St. John's and occupies the same 6.5 acres of land today that it did when it was first opened 124 years ago.

“Many generations of residents have enjoyed leisure time at Victoria Park,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “It is our hope that this funding will contribute to protecting, preserving and improving this important open space for generations to come.”

Fifty per cent of the funds for this project have been identified as part of the province’s one-time capital works program for municipalities, announced in Budget 2014, matched with City dollars.

“It is my hope that this funding will result is some immediate improvements, but equally as important will spark more significant, long term investment in Victoria Park,” said Ward 2 Councillor Jonathan Galgay.

The City of St. John’s will seek opportunities to gather input from the public which will be considered in the development of the revitalization plan.

“We want to hear from residents and from others with a vested interest in seeing Victoria Park flourish,” explained Councillor Galgay. “I look forward to working with staff and the neighbourhood to identify how best to invest in this important, historical and vibrant landmark.”

Public engagement opportunities will be announced within the next two months.
