Voters List Now Online; Register to be Eligible to Vote in September

Thursday, June 29, 2017 - 12:15 PM

For the upcoming 2017 municipal election, the City will use the permanent list of voters which is established and maintained by Elections NL for use in a provincial and/or municipal election. To ensure receipt of a vote by mail kit, electors must be registered on the voters list.

It is important that all residents of the City of St. John’s check the voters list to ensure they are registered to vote and that the address we have is correct so that you receive the right vote-by-mail kit.
Checking the list and requesting a change is a simple process:

  • Visit stjohns.ca and go to the ‘Municipal Election’ page under ‘City Hall’. Look up your name and address to ensure the information is accurate. If you are not on the list or the information is not accurate, follow the simple instruction to request a change.
  • You can also call the Access St. John’s Service Centre at 311 or 754‐CITY (2489) or drop in to the Service Centre,  first floor City Hall, 10 New Gower Street.

Residents should not assume they are on the voters list. There are multiple reasons why residents may not be included, such as:

  • Recently having moved to the City or within the City
  • Recently having turned 18
  • A name change

While we do use the tax roll to verify the list, receiving a tax bill from the City does not necessarily mean you will be on the voter’s list. We ask residents to encourage other eligible voters - particularly those in their household - to check, too. All eligible voters in a household must be registered to receive a voter’s kit in September. You are considered eligible if you are a Canadian citizen over the age of 18 and resident of the City by at least August 27, 2017.

For details on the 2017 municipal election, scheduled to occur on September 26, please visit the City’s website. The site will be updated with new information as the election gets closer.
