Waste Reduction Week: Recycling Makes a Difference

In recognition of Waste Reduction Week, October 15 to 21, the City of St. John's is encouraging residents and organizations to reduce waste, recycle and to choose products and services that are environmentally friendly.

City staff and partner organizations will be at the St. John’s Farmers’ Market, 245 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 2 to 8 p.m. to provide information and free compost samples to the public while supplies last. Bring your own container for the compost.

You can make a difference:

• Curbside recycling is at your door step, all you need are blue bags, learn more here.
• Backyard composting – we offer free sessions every spring, summer and fall.
• Grass and leaf mulching - the best thing to do for the environment is to mulch your leaves with the lawn mower. If you have too many leaves to mulch, yard waste is collected at the curb from May to November. Yard waste must be in a paper yard waste bag.
• Proper disposal of hazardous and special waste material is important – bring your material to Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays.
• Recycle your metal, electronics, containers, paper and cardboard from Tuesday to Saturday at the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility.
• Consider using reusable shopping bags. 

There are many partners working together to help make the city a clean and beautiful place. This week we would like to celebrate all residents, organizations and businesses who go the extra mile to divert waste from the landfill and to keep our city clean.
