Work Moving Ahead on Main Road, Goulds

Monday, March 04, 2013 - 11:15 AM

Construction work will begin in April in the Goulds area on the Main Road Upgrading Project. The section of Main Road from Keith Drive to Durdle Drive will be upgraded to urban standards with curb, gutter and sidewalks. The installation of a new storm sewer system between Dirty Brook and Durdle Drive will also be included in the project.

The estimated cost of the project is $3.2 million and is cost-shared by the Government of Canada, the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the City of St. John’s.

“We recognize that there are some serious infrastructure deficits in the Goulds and this is another step towards us upgrading the services we provide to residents of this area,” says Ward 5 Councillor Wally Collins, chair of the Public Works and Environment Standing Committee. “This project has been in the works for a long time and I am very pleased to see it get underway this spring.”

The construction project on Main Road is expected to be completed in the fall. During the construction phase, traffic detours will be in place.

“I do understand that this will be a disruption to the residents who live and work in the area, but we will do everything we can to mitigate the impact of this construction work,” says Councillor Collins. “This is very important work and I would like to thank the residents of the area in advance for their patience and understanding.”

An open house for residents of the area who have any questions regarding this project will take place on March 6 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Foran/Greene Room, fourth floor, City Hall.
