Fresh off a short summer tour of our beautiful island, we are proud to present What Was Needed Most on the opening night of our 19th annual Tuckamore Festival. Robert Chafe’s stunning monologues will carry you through time and place, exploring life in our pre-Confederation province, telling the stories of real Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.



Juno award-winning Duo Concertante (Nancy Dahn, violin; Timothy Steeves, piano), Tuckamore faculty cellist Vernon Regehr, and celebrated playwright Robert Chafe take to the stage on Opening Night with What Was Needed Most, a unique musical and dramatic piece that celebrates Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in Canada. The foundation of this collaboration is uncovered in the collected stories and music from across the province, bringing to light the voices, hopes and dreams that are the threads that bind us all together. Robert Chafe (Artistic Fraud) has explored the rugged beauty of our province, gathering original tales from a variety of individuals that weave an intimate depiction of life in pre-confederation Newfoundland and Labrador.



New music has been commissioned from three NL composers, Duane Andrews, Bekah Simms, and Aiden Hartery, the latter two alumni of the Tuckamore Young Composers Program. Their music, inspired by the rich traditions of their home, illuminates the subtext of Chafe’s intimate writing, accompanying the audience on their journey through time and place, as they bring to light What Was Needed Most.
