Theatres and Venues

There are several theatres and live venues in the City of St. John’s. The City houses an array of performances ranging from small edgy, original work created by local artists to 1100 seat venues presenting performances from international artists. The theatre season typically begins in September but summer shows are continuing to grow and develop. For more information, see listings below.

Arts and Culture Centre
A division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, the head offices of the Arts and Culture Centres are located in the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre. Committed to excellence and presenting the best to patrons, the Arts and Culture Centres offer a wide variety of programming from the best that Newfoundland has to offer to diverse artists from across Canada and abroad. The St. John's Arts and Culture Centre was opened on May 22, 1967. The Centre houses a 990 seat proscenium Main Theatre, a 75 seat black box Basement Theatre, childrens, adult and reference libraries, art galleries, and catering services. The A.C. Hunter Public Library, the A.C. Hunter-Childern's Library and Acorn Catering are all located in the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre.

Holy Heart Theatre
A 900-seat theatre booked by national concert promoters, community theatrical groups, music festivals, dance schools, and local musicians.

Masonic Temple
The Masonic Temple is home to Spirit of Newfoundland, one of Newfoundland’s most successful musical theatre, performance, and food and beverage companies. The Temple was built 114 years ago and is the oldest fraternal brick structure in the province. It is also the only heritage building in the downtown that can host groups. It is an architectural gem that boasts four performance rooms, a massive pipe organ, pianos in every room, and numerous historic Masonic symbols and shrines that inspire plenty of mystery and intrigue. This building is saturated in history and stands stately on a hill in the heart of the downtown.

Memorial University School of Music
Memorial's School of Music operates several facilities that can be booked by both the university community and external individuals and groups, including: The D.F. Cook Recital Hall, a 296-seat concert hall available for music and speech; Petro-Canada Hall, which seats about 120 and has multimedia and recording capabilities; Other choral and rehearsal rooms available for rent.

Mile One Centre
This multi-purpose sport and entertainment centre also offers a wide variety of other programming including concerts, trade shows and special events. Mile One Centre has a 6,000 seat spectator capacity.

Resource Centre for the Arts/LSPU
RESOURCE CENTRE FOR THE ARTS/LSPU HALL The LSPU Hall, affectionately known as The Hall, is home base for the Resource Centre for the Arts (RCA). The Hall is the heart of LIVE theatre and the cultural pulse of downtown St. John's. Thousands of internationally acclaimed actors, musicians and dancers have passed through the Hall on their way to stardom, and in this city you're steps away from the action. The Ship Pub
The Ship Pub features live music most nights of the week and often hosts parties and events occurring as part of local festivals. The live performances are diverse, from young indie bands to some of the city's most established artists. The kitchen offers casual dining: contemporary dishes, comfort food, and fresh takes on traditional pub fare.

The SPACE
The Wonderbolt SPACE (Studio for the Physical Arts and Circus Education) is a 1700 sq. ft. property in the heart of downtown designed to create and foster creativity and an appreciation of the Physical Arts. It is a fully equipped functional rehearsal space, circus school, mini theatre, and physical arts studio, offering programs and opportunities to a wide spectrum of interests and ages, from toddlers to seniors.
