Cape Spear National Historic Site

Just 17 kilometres from downtown St. John's, Cape Spear National Historic Site is situated at the most easterly point in North America. Here, overlooking the North Atlantic, stands the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and a Second World War coastal defence battery.   Visit the restored lighthouse, stop by the visitor centre for exhibits on the history of lighthouses and their technology, and purchase a souvenir from the gift shop.  Walking trails take the visitor along the coast to the most easterly point and Fort Cape Spear, a Second World War coastal defence battery.  Portions of the East Coast Trail can also be accessed from Cape Spear. Icebergs, seabirds and whales are frequently seen during the summer with whale-watching popular from mid-June to August. Although beautiful, the coastline is hazardous and safety signs should be strictly observed.
