Deputy City Manager Receives National Recognition
The City of St. John’s congratulates its Deputy City Manager, Community Services, Jill Brewer, who has been named one of the Top 20 Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity for 2013 by the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sports and Physical Activity (CAAWS).
Since moving to St. John’s 29 years ago Jill has made many contributions in the City to support sport and recreation. Jill has held many positions within the City’s corporate structure. She was the first female Manager of St. John’s Memorial Stadium (1994) and the City’s first female Director of Recreation and is the longest standing female Director at the City since 1998. Jill also serves on the board of directors of a number of provincial and national sports organizations including Coaching NL and Diving Canada.
“We are very proud that Jill Brewer has been recognized nationally for her work and accomplishments as one of the most influential women in sport in Canada,” says Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “Jill has made numerous positive contributions to sport and recreation in our community including creating our first concrete skate park, installing ‘green gyms’ in City parks that allows free access to outdoor fitness equipment, the creation of the Bowring Park Splash Pad and the development of our REAL Program, now in its tenth year. She has also worked with other community agencies to expand their recreation services including the YMCA, Easter Seals, the Boys and Girls Club Buckmasters Circle and the MacMorran Centre.”
CAAWS is a national non-profit organization dedicated to creating an equitable sport and physical activity system in which girls and women are actively engaged as participants and leaders.
