Snow clearing activities are continuing throughout the City, focused on ensuring emergency vehicles have access to all streets. In conjunction with snow clearing operations, the City of St. John’s is actively removing snow from as many fire hydrants as possible to ensure the St. John’s Regional Fire Department has access to them in an emergency.

“There are more than 3,200 fire hydrants in the City and we are focused on clearing the snow from around the ones located in high risk areas first,” says Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “We have seen over the past weekend that our residents are both resilient and care deeply about their community and we must ask for their assistance one more time. Residents who are able to clear away snow from fire hydrants in their area are not only helping the City, but they are also helping themselves and their neighbours should an emergency arise. We are all in this together and together we will weather this storm.”

St. John’s has seen unprecedented snow accumulation over the past few weeks due to a number of winter storms that dropped record amounts of snowfall on the region.

The City would like to encourage residents throughout the winter season to please be mindful of any fire hydrants and/or catch basins on or near their property when snowclearing. The City appreciates any assistance residents can provide in helping to keep hydrants and catch basins clear in their neighbourhoods.
