The City of St. John’s has begun installation of new digital parking meters in the Churchill Square and Downtown areas.

“Although the issues that arose after the Canadian Mint changed the composition of their coins were unfortunate, we have used this situation as an opportunity to upgrade and modernize our parking meter systems,” says Councillor Bernard Davis, Chair of the Community Services and Housing Standing Committee. “Last week we began installing new parking meters throughout the City replacing the current models which are unable to accept new loonies and toonies.”

Installation has been completed in the Churchill Square area and Water Street. Today, staff began replacing the meters on Duckworth Street. The City will keep residents updated through social media tools on what streets are scheduled for installation.

“It is important to note for those residents who use our convenient ParkCards they will have to come in to the Access St. John’s Citizen Service Centre to exchange their cards for a new one,” says Councillor Davis. “The new cards are now available for purchase and balances remaining on old ParkCards can be transferred to your new card at no additional charge.”

The new parking meters the City will install have many positive attributes including:

  • Convenience of multiple payment options (i.e. credit cards, coins and ParkCards).
  • The new parking meters will work with current and future coins issued by the Canadian Mint.
  • Meters are easier to maintain, which will reduce downtime and improve customer service.
  • A large backlit screen makes the meter easy to use and understand.

The City also encourages residents to consider the convenience of using a ParkCard. Some of the advantages include:

  • No minimum purchase requirements, unlike credit cards.
  • Users can be refunded for unused time, unlike other payment methods.
  • ParkCards are reloadable with only a one-time $2 set up fee when first purchased.
  • The convenience of never having to worry about carrying the correct change.

Once the new meters are installed the new parking rate will be 25 cents per 10 minutes, or $1.50 per hour.
