Text Amendments - Aquaponics

Mon, 2014/02/24 - 4:30pm

The City of St. John’s is considering approval of a text amendment to the St. John's Development Regulations which will introduce a new definition for aquaponics as a Discretionary Use in the Agriculture (AG) Zone. This use will include greenhouse style buildings containing closed tanks for raising fish. The buildings required would be built above ground and would use natural lighting. Additional artificial lighting will be necessary for plant growth only when natural daylight is not sufficient to provide 14 hours per day.

Similarly, a second text amendment is being considered towards amending the St. John's Development Regulations to allow the use of greenhouses for Horticulture, Hydroponic Operations, Aquaculture and Aquaponics operations, on a discretionary basis.
