The Heritage Area in the City of St. John’s is a unique and vibrant part of our culture. Each year on Heritage Day (the third Monday in February) the City of St. John’s recognizes individuals and businesses for their outstanding restoration efforts.

This year, during the weekly City Council meeting, Mayor Dennis O’Keefe will present certificates of recognition to the following businesses:

  • Hubert Alacoque, Innovative Development & Design Engineers Ltd., for 42 Power’s Court, Anderson House
  • Wayne Purchase, ZRCH Duckworth Street Inc., for 271 Duckworth Street
  • Alfred Marshall, Adelaide Group Ltd., for 336 Water Street

“The Downtown Heritage Area is the heart and soul of our City and we are very pleased today to honour commercial and residential property owners for their work in rehabilitating, restoring and celebrating our rich built heritage,” said Mayor O’Keefe. “These properties are a wonderful illustration of what can be accomplished when owners take pride in their homes, businesses and City.”
“We are pleased to see we have three properties being recognized this year for their efforts to preserve our City’s unique heritage,” said co-chair of the City’s Heritage Advisory Committee, Councillor Sandy Hickman. “Congratulations to each of our award recipients on a job well done.”

“As a committee, we could think of no day more appropriate than Heritage Day to take a moment and honour residents who have gone the extra mile to ensure our Heritage Area remains vibrant and creative,” added co-chair, Councillor Dave Lane. “We were very pleased with the nominations this year and I hope these buildings will encourage others to take the necessary steps to ensure their properties also represent our distinctive downtown flavour.”

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and Newfoundland Historic Trust will also participate in the event, which includes a proclamation signing by the Mayor to officially recognize the day as Heritage Day.
