Afterschool Recreation Programs Prepare for National Anti-Bullying Day

Monday, February 24, 2014 - 4:30 PM

Tonight at city council, children who take part in the City’s afterschool recreation programs presented members of council with pink t-shirts to recognize and promote National Anti-Bullying Day, which is Wednesday, Feb. 26.

“As a father and grandfather, I’m so proud to see our youngest residents taking a stand on such an important issue,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “We pride ourselves in the City of St. John’s on being a welcoming and friendly place where people are respected as individuals. I applaud their efforts to prevent bullying and promote respectful behaviour.”

The City of St. John’s offers a wide variety of programs for children that encompass structured play programs, day camps/child care programs, family programs and special events. Our staff are qualified and dedicated leaders whose focus is to ensure children are provided with a safe and fun environment that encourages physical activity, physical literacy and supports healthy child development.

“National Anti-Bullying Day began when two young students – not unlike those in our programs – stood up for a friend who was being bullied just because of his pink shirt,” said Councillor Bernard Davis, the Chair of the City’s Standing Committee on Community Services and Housing. “Our staff are pleased to be promoting anti-bullying and participating in this national event. It is a great cause.”
