City Fills Two Times More Potholes To Date In 2014

From the beginning of January to the end of April 2014, City of St. John’s crews filled a record number of potholes - 2,823 - a 106 per cent increase over 2013 and a 60 per cent increase over 2012.
 
“Our staff has been working diligently to address the conditions of our roads after a particularly hard winter,” explained Councillor Jonathan Galgay, chairperson of the Public Works Standing Committee. “Their hard work is reflected in the impressive number of potholes addressed in 2014 to date.”
 
In the month of April alone, 992 potholes were filled.
 
Since the beginning of this year, 1,272 potholes have been reported through Access St. John’s. An additional 1,551 have been identified by our crews, for a total 2,823 for 2014. Last year, to the end of April, 1,372 potholes had been filled; and in 2012, 1,762 potholes had been filled at the end of April.
 
The City has four to eight crews involved in pothole repair, working eight to 12 hours a day, six days per week. In order for pothole work to occur, crews require that the roads be free of ice and snow with no water in the gutters, that it not be snowing or raining hard, and that traffic volumes are low in the area.
 
“Despite the difficult winter and conditions that are not always the best for road repair work, our crews are working hard to get our roads in better condition,” said Councillor Galgay. “We certainly are demonstrating our commitment to addressing potholes in the City, and we appreciate the public’s patience and understanding when this work causes delays or inconveniences.”
