MolsonCoors Canada Athlete of the Year Awarded

The 62nd annual MolsonCoors Canada Athlete of the Year awards were handed out on Friday, February 8 at City Hall.

Female Athlete of the Year - Hannah Jardine
In 2012, Jardine's O'Donel High School team captured tournament victories in the Clarence Sutton Memorial Tournament, Booth Memorial Tournament, were 4A finalists and Elite Eight Champions. Jardine also played with a Division One ladies league team, the Bay Ladies, throughout the year. Jardine travelled to two tournaments in Chicago and Pennsylvania with a club team from Ontario in July.  In August, Jardine travelled to Belgium and Amsterdam with the U-17 Cadette Women's National Team where she spent a month training with them and later went on to win a bronze medal at the FIBA World U-17 Female Championships. In November, Jardine was recruited by a Division One school, The University of Delaware and accepted an athletic scholarship. Jardine will finish high school at O'Donel and head to Delaware in July to play with the Delaware Blue Hens. Hannah will be working toward a mechanical engineering degree during her time in Delaware.

Male Athlete of the Year - Matthew Beer
Matthew Beer kept rolling on, achieving accolades in the world of Mountain Biking in 2012. Beer won the Elite DH (downhill) division at the 2012 Canadian Championship  Beer was also selected to represent Team Canada at the 2012 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Leogang, Austria. Beer is a consistent, fast racer, being the second fastest Canadian in five of the seven World Cup races in 2012 and being the second fastest Canadian in the 2012 World Championship.

Team of the Year - 3 Cheers Pub
2012 marked the first ever Gold Medal for Newfoundland and Labrador at the Senior Men's level at the National Championships. The team outscored the opposition 74-4 during the round robin and playoff schedule. The tournament was highlighted by the outstanding pitching performances of Sean Cleary and Sean Whitten and an unprecedented hitting display by Stephen Mullaly which included a record breaking 10 home runs. The outstanding performance of this team during the past three years has garnered the attention of the National Team coaching staff and has resulted in a record six Newfoundlanders being named to the Canadian National Team that will represent Canada at the ISF World Championships in New Zealand in 2013.
