The City of St. John’s is now accepting nominations for the Senior of the Year Award, sponsored by Kenny's Pond Retirement Community.

“This is our third year for the Senior of the Year Award and over the past two years the nominations we have received have been outstanding,” explains Councillor at Large Tom Hann, Council representative on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors. “This is a great opportunity for residents and organizations to honour a senior who has stepped up and gotten involved in our community. Our pool of candidates in previous years has been very strong, so if you have made a nomination in previous years and would like to resubmit your nomination we would love to hear from you again.”

The Senior of the Year Award was developed by the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors and is designed to honour a senior who has made significant contributions to the City through service to the community or by improving the quality of life for citizens through community involvement.

Nominees must be 60 years of age or older, a current resident of St. John’s (or a resident within the past six months) and should not have received any remuneration for their services.

“There are so many seniors throughout the City of St. John’s who give back to our community and ask nothing in return,” says Allan Miller, Chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors. “We believe this service deserves recognition and that's why we created the Senior of the Year Award as we work to acknowledge the contributions seniors make to our society.”

Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community is returning for its third year as award sponsor and are pleased to have this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions seniors make to our community.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity again this year to join the City of St. John’s to honour and celebrate the work of our senior volunteers,” says Mary Davis, Executive Director of the Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community. “We all know seniors who do so much for our community. These silent heroes give selflessly, expecting nothing in return. And yet, their contributions often make a difference not only to the organizations they serve, but in changing how the public views growing older.”

Nomination forms are available at the Office of the City Clerk, fourth Floor, City Hall. A copy of the guidelines and the Senior of the Year Award nomination form can be found online.

Nominations for the 2013 award must be received no later than Thursday, May 2, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. The Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors will make the final decision on the Senior of the Year award.

Nominations can be dropped off or mailed to the City Clerk’s office on the fourth floor of City Hall or E-mail: cityclerk@stjohns.ca.
