Occupational Health and Safety

The City of St. John's is committed to maintaining a healthy and safe working environment for our own employees, members of the public, and for employees of companies contracted to provide work or services. In order to help achieve this goal, we have developed a Contractor's Safety Policy and Program:

Companies wishing to bid on City work must comply with the following safety requirements:
 
Statutory Declaration/Safety Checklist
All companies wishing to bid on City work must comply with the contractor's safety program and ensure the 'Statutory Declaration' and the 'Safety Checklist' is completed and signed off prior to commencing work. The intent is for all prospective contractors to be aware of their safety obligations prior to bidding so that all associated costs and resources can be estimated.

Orientation/Information Session
A representative of the contracting company is required to attend a general orientation to become familiar with the City's safety expectations and general guidelines. A pre-job meeting is also compulsory at least one week prior to starting work to discuss safety hazards and challenges specific to the job. These meetings will be attended by representatives of the City department responsible for the job and the City's Safety Officer.

Letter of Good Standing
Contractors engaged in work with significant occupational health and safety risks are required to provide a Letter of Good Standing under the Certificate of Recognition Program from the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association. This letter shall be provided within 14 days of award of the contract and prior to the commencement of the work.
