Snow Clearing

On average, St. John’s receives 335 cm of snow each year. The City of St. John's budgets approximately $17 million each year for snow clearing and ice control operations.

City staff work hard to clear our streets and sidewalks to standards approved by Council. Our standards are similar to other cities with weather conditions like ours. Streets and designated sidewalks are salted and plowed in a priority order that is primarily based on commuter volumes. This ensures emergency vehicle access is maintained to the greatest number of residents at all times.

Throughout the City, winter parking restrictions are in place to ensure that our plows can clear our streets safely and effectively. Streets may also be scheduled for snow removal throughout the season.
