Speed Limits

Speeding in residential areas is one of the most frequent complaints received by the City of St. John's Traffic Division. Often we are requested to reduce the speed limit on a street to discourage speeding. However, research has shown that drivers will drive at a speed they are comfortable at regardless of the posted speed limit.

How are speed limits set?
Speed limits are determined largely by roadway geometry and adjacent land use. According to the Highway Traffic Act, the speed limit on all residential streets in the City of St. John's is 50 km per hour unless otherwise posted, as per the City of St. John's Speed Limit Bylaw.

Why isn’t there a speed limit sign on my street?
Because the posted speed limit is 50 km per hour on all residential streets, posting the same sign on all streets is not necessary. Once you drive into a residential area you should automatically lower your speed.

What can I do if people are speeding on my street?
You can contact the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary at 729-8000. They are responsible for enforcing speed limits in the City of St. John’s.
