Volunteer Junior Recreation Leader Program
The City of St. John's Volunteer Junior Recreation Leader program is designed to provide youth with a workplace educational experience where participants are exposed to the daily routine of our caring recreation practitioners. Each participant will be mentored and exposed to the duties associated with being employed as a Recreation Leader. The program prides itself in providing a fun filled atmosphere designed to challenge youth by developing self-respect and a sense of camaraderie through team building. Volunteer Junior Recreation Leaders agree to adhere to policies and procedures of the City of St. John's and Department of Community Services, Recreation Division.

Date & Times:
Youth are required to volunteer once a week for five weeks during the months outlined below. The scheduled day and time will be determined between the youth and on-site supervisor.

  • Summer (July to August)
  • Fall (November to December)
  • Winter (February to April)

  • Parkside Community Centre (Summer Only- 126 Barachois Street)
  • Macdonald Drive Elementary (Summer Only- 100 Macdonald Drive)
  • Rennie River Elementary (Summer Only- 150 Elizabeth Avenue)

Qualifications:

Ages:  14 years and older
Education: Currently enrolled in Junior High or High School

The following certificates are not mandatory but will aid in your application process:

  • Standard or Emergency First Aid/CPR
  • Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Certificate of Conduct
  • High Five courses
  • Leadership training
