2019 City of St. John’s Tourism Award Winners Announced

The City of St. John’s is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 Tourism Awards program. The awards recognize individuals, groups and businesses for their outstanding contributions to the tourism industry in providing a unique and quality experience.

The winners will accept their awards at individual, private ceremonies today at City Hall. The awards presentation, typically held annually at City Hall, was cancelled for this year due to COVID-19 precautions.

“I am pleased to present these awards to the individuals and organizations that offer outstanding services and positive experiences to visitors to our capital city,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “Tourism is an important sector of our economy and the work these groups and individuals do make us a sought-after destination.”

  • The Discovery Award for offering new or innovative tourism-related services was presented to Quidi Vidi Charters.
  • The Signal Award for significant contributions to the cruise ship industry was presented to Newfoundland Dogs.
  • The Sport Tourism Award for hosting a sporting event that made significant contributions to the tourism industry was presented to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifier.
  • The Event of the Year Award for exemplifying the spirit of St. John’s and generating tourism visitation was presented to the Canadian Progress Club (St. John’s) for Ribfest.
  • The Legend Award is the City’s pinnacle award for contribution to the enhancement of tourism in St. John’s and was awarded posthumously to Larry Dohey.

St. John’s tourism partner Destination St. John’s presented its annual Award of Distinction to Sandra Whiffen, the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Newfoundland and Labrador Inc.
