$500 Awarded to East Point Elementary for IWALK

Wednesday, December 15, 2021 - 10:45 AM

October was International Walk or wheel to School (IWALK) Month - an annual celebration of active transportation that takes place around the world. Traditionally hundreds of schools across Canada celebrate IWALK with special events throughout the month.

The City of St. John’s Recreation division invited local schools to participate in IWALK through creative ways to get active.

On Wednesday, Dec. 15, Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary presented a $500 cheque from the City of St. John’s to East Point Elementary, the winning school of this year's IWALK challenge. Approximately 125 to150 students from East Point Elementary walked or wheeled to school each day in October.

Congratulations to East Point Elementary, 2021 IWALK to School winner!

Hundreds of students from schools all over St. John’s participated in IWALK with a range of activities including:

  • Community walks before school – participants gathered at a central location and walked or wheeled to school together
  • Nature walks or group walks at walking trails near their schools
  • Outdoor learning and physical education classes
  • A designated International Walk to School Day where groups of students and staff participated
  • Participation in the annual Terry Fox Run

The City of St. John’s is happy to support this initiative in getting youth active and contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
