Affordable Housing for Seniors: Research Project Update

Wednesday, March 16, 2016 - 3:15 AM

Yesterday City Council was provided an update on the Seniors Housing Research Project, which was recently shared with the public during the Seniors Housing Forum in December.

“Seniors comprise a significant portion of our population and this number is growing. Providing opportunities for safe, accessible and affordable housing is a top priority,” said Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth, Chair of the Standing Committee on Community Services and Housing. “I am pleased to see the recommendations put forward through the Seniors Housing Research Project, which will help us achieve the goal set forth in the Affordable Housing Business Plan, to provide 100 age friendly homes for seniors by 2017.”

Funded by the City of St. John’s and the provincial government of Newfoundland Labrador, the report was prompted by the City’s Age Friendly Survey where local seniors identified housing as their top issue of concern.

Details of the report are available in the attached document, which identifies a wide range of actives and recommendations including a Request for Proposals to secure a feasibility study for a central housing waitlist.
