Annual Volunteer Awards Presented

Today, over 100 volunteers attended a Volunteer Week reception at the Signal Hill Campus of Memorial University, an annual event hosted by the City of St. John’s in partnership with the Memorial University Student Volunteer Bureau.
 
“The City of St. John’s values the contributions of all volunteers and the impact they have on the community as a whole,” said Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary. “Volunteer Week is an excellent opportunity to express our gratitude to the many dedicated volunteers in St. John’s, and to publicly recognize their efforts.”
 
The volunteer award breakfast was emceed by Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary and Taylor Ivany, Coordinator of Memorial University Student Volunteer Bureau, and the guest speaker was Raylene Mackey, Honourary Co-Chair of Provincial Volunteer Week.

The Building Healthy Communities award is presented annually to individuals and/or groups in St. John’s who are helping to create vibrant communities and enhance the quality of life for citizens through delivering leisure programs and services.

This year five Building Healthy Communities awards were awarded:

  • Justin Blundon (Posthumous), Goulds Resident                                                       
  • Nabila Qureshi, Memorial University chapter of World University Service of Canada                    
  • Randy Murphy, President of East Coast Trail Association                                                   
  • Happy City St. John’s, Chaired by Rob Nolan
  • St. John Bosco Nan and Pop Breakfast Group

April 7 to 13, 2019 is National Volunteer Week in Canada and the theme is ‘The Volunteer Factor Lifting Communities’
