Bannerman Park Loop Opens to Skaters

Tuesday, December 24, 2013 - 2:45 PM

The Bannerman Loop has officially opened and residents and visitors may now use the new ice trail in Bannerman Park.

“We are extremely pleased that mother nature cooperated and allowed us to lay down the ice just before Christmas Day so we could open this new feature in Bannerman Park, which I am sure will become a Christmas tradition for years to come,” says Mayor O’Keefe. “The trail is a lovely, unique feature in what is St. John’s most historic park and I look forward to coming down and enjoying the Bannerman Loop with my grandchildren. The City of St. John’s is pleased to partner with the Bannerman Park Foundation and patron Elinor Ratcliffe and we thank them for all of their passion and dedication to this project.”

The new ice trail is not your standard skating rink, rather it loops through the centre of Bannerman Park and offers a unique skating experience in the heart of the city. It is designed for leisurely skating and is family friendly. Lighting will also allow it to be used in the evenings. The infrastructure for the Bannerman Loop was constructed at a cost of $1.8 million and was cost shared 50-50 by the Bannerman Park Foundation and the City of St. John’s.

“We are extremely pleased with the progress we have been making on the revitalization of Bannerman Park,” says Councillor Jonathan Galgay, Chair of the Public Works Standing Committee. “Construction of a new accessibly playground, splash pad and pool house is also ongoing. These projects are all part of a $6 million revitalization project in Bannerman Park, which, once finished, will provide residents and visitors to our City with a first-class recreation complex for winter and summer activities.”
