Councillor Jamie Korab, Chair of St. John’s Sports and Entertainment Ltd. is pleased to announce that a lease agreement has been reached with local ownership group 2001 Investments Limited, bringing a new professional basketball team to Mile One Centre this fall.

“On behalf of the Board and the City of St. John’s, I am pleased to announce that a five-year lease agreement has been reached with 2001 Investments Ltd.,” said Councillor Korab. “We look forward to many exciting seasons of play in the American Basketball Association.”

“As a local ownership group, we’ve been working for years to bring competitive spectator sports to the province. We had a great experience working with SJSEL on this project, and we’re excited for the potential of our partnership going forward. The ABA is high-flying, high quality and fast-paced basketball that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are going to love,” said Tony Kenny, President of 2001 Investments Ltd, the group behind the successful bid.

“We are also proud to announce at this time that we will host 30 games at Mile One this season, which is more basketball than we’ve ever seen here before,” said Mr. Kenny. “We’re excited about what that means for our fans and the economic spin-off for the city. We also can’t wait to showcase our province to markets across the US and give them a glimpse of everything that we have to offer here. It’s going to be a great year.”

The lease was signed on September 7.

Details on the team and ticket sales will be announced soon.

City Council and the Board encourage all citizens support this new team as they make St. John’s their home.
