The 'Big Data, Big Ideas' project provides insights that can benefit municipalities, the business community, and other stakeholders.

The City of St. John’s through an initiative with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) and neighbouring municipalities, have worked with Memorial University's Regional Analytics Laboratory (RAnLab) on the analysis and interpretation of demographic shifts from an economic development perspective, the 'Big Data, Big Ideas' project.

Providing data at the municipal and regional level on the local economy, these reports include demographic projections and inform on topics such as incomes and spending, employment, occupational trends, commuting and housing. It illustrates our changing demographics, implications of an aging population, and migration patterns.

“We are pleased to be part of this program that provides in-depth information on a local level. This collaboration provides insights that will aid economic development efforts and inform strategies” said Mayor Breen. “We are building our economic place marketing  Advantage St. John’s to drive home the many advantages of living and working in our city and this data provides context around the need to attract and retain people.”

The St. John’s report can be found here and the Northeast Avalon report can be found here on the City’s website.
