The City is providing opportunities for youth ages 18 - 30 to help shape how the city engages with, and learns from, youth throughout the community.

“I am eager to hear from young people in our community on how we can better align our goals and engagement opportunities with this demographic,” said Councillor Maggie Burton, Council Champion for the Youth Engagement Working Group. “If you are a young person in the City of St. John’s, or if you know a young person interested in sharing their ideas, and are passionate about our city, I ask you to share this exciting opportunity and to consider putting your name forward and getting involved.”

There are two opportunities to participate: the Youth Engagement Working Group and the Online Youth Panel.

"There is such a great opportunity to shape the future of our city by engaging youth. Through different perspectives and backgrounds, you can offer amazing insights into every aspect of our city,” said Maria Penney, member of the Youth Engagement Action Team. The youth engagement panel and the youth engagement working group are both great opportunities to get involved with varying levels of commitment. Whether you are looking for a simple way to have your voice heard or to be part of the working group, I would encourage all youth to get involved. "

Youth Engagement Working Group
A formal commitment for a term of approximately two years, with quarterly meetings.

The Youth Engagement Working Group will build on the work completed in 2020 through the short-term Youth Engagement Action Team and oversee implementation of the Youth Engagement Strategy. As well, they will provide ongoing advice and guidance on how to best engage youth on City matters. Members will be asked for their perspective on topics that are of interest to them and will recommend the most appropriate engagement tools and methods.  The Working Group will provide youth perspectives on the development of City strategies, policies or programs as requested by Council, staff, or other City bodies. In selecting Working Group members, the City is committed to a transparent, accessible process, free of discrimination, and to seeks to remove barriers for disadvantaged groups. To express interest in this Working Group, check out the expression of interest before February 16, 2022.

Youth Panel
An informal commitment where members receive opportunities to provide feedback in real time as they choose.

Those who sign up for the ongoing, online Panel will receive direct messages to provide feedback on specific questions and topics. As recommended by the Youth Engagement Strategy, the Panel will be comprised of youth aged 18 to 30. The City will tap into the Youth Panel when looking for a youth perspective on various topics from economic development, planning, parks, and public transit to name a few. Panel members will have multiple options for how they are contacted and will be able to provide feedback in the ways that they prefer, including text message. Active members of the Panel will also have opportunities to win tokens of appreciation throughout the year.
