On Wednesday, October 8, the City of St. John’s will host an information session for individuals interested in participating in a Neighbourhood Watch.

“Neighbourhood Watch is not a new program,” said Councillor Bernard Davis, Chair of the Standing Committee on Community Services, “but it is a proven way to reduce and prevent crime at the community level.”

The City of St. John’s and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary are partners in bringing Neighbourhood Watch to St. John’s.

Neighbourhood Watch is a safe program that does not require residents to patrol or take on the responsibilities of the police, a common misconception about the program. Rather it is about banding together to keep your eyes open to anything that looks out-of-the-ordinary and alerting the police when necessary.

Starting a Neighbourhood Watch also helps neighbours build relationships as they unite around a shared concern. “That’s one of the unexpected benefits of belonging to a Neighbourhood Watch,” says Councillor Davis. “Uniting as a neighbourhood helps to create a sense of belonging which is key in creating stronger communities and an improved quality of life for all residents.”

When a new Watch is established, Neighbourhood Watch signs are placed on the street, and all members receive plastic decals for their door or window to show that the household is a registered member.  There is no cost to the neighbourhood for these materials.

Information Session Scheduled
On Wednesday, October 8, the City will host an information session at the Fluvarium, beginning at 7 p.m. All are welcome.
