RNC City of St.John's Winter Safe Driving

February 9, 2015 – Today during St. John’s City Council meeting, Mayor Dennis O’Keefe and Chief Bill Janes of The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), launched a new partnership and marketing campaign aimed at promoting safe winter driving in the capital city.

“During the winter months we see an increase in incidents related to winter driving, many of which are preventable,” said Dennis O’Keefe, Mayor of the City of St. John’s. “We are happy to announce that we are partnering with the RNC for a new media campaign that encourages safe driving practices and aims to increase motorists’ awareness about navigating alongside of heavy equipment used for snow clearing and removal.”

It is critical to public safety that all motorists clear snow and ice off of their vehicles before driving, and exercise extreme caution around heavy equipment such as snow plows and sanders.

“The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is pleased to partner with the City of St. John’s in a winter safe driving campaign. The RNC wishes to improve safety on our roadways by educating the public through increased messaging. We feel this campaign is a great way to do that” said Chief Bill Janes. “Having a safe driving campaign during this time of year is especially important. Drivers need to know that operating a vehicle in the winter months requires they adjust their driving habits to the surroundings and road conditions.”

The media campaign begins this week and will continue throughout the month of February.
