CN EcoConnexions - From the Ground Up program in collaboration with Tree Canada and Communities in Bloom announced that the City of St. John's has been awarded a $25,000 grant for tree and shrub planting, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canada.

“I commend staff for their successful application on this significant grant through CN and its partners, which will be used to plant trees and shrubs at the new Paul Reynold Community Centre,” said Councillor Danny Breen, Chair of Public Works Standing Committee.

Additionally, Bowring Park received special mention, and the City of St. John’s received four Blooms at the annual Communities in Bloom National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies held on October 29 in Regina, SK.

“As council representative on the Communities in Bloom committee I am pleased that St. John’s and specifically Bowring Park has been recognized,” said Councillor Sandy Hickman. “I thank the many individuals and partners who work hard to maintain and beautify parks and open spaces throughout the City, including our very own staff.”

Over the summer, Communities in Bloom judges travelled to St. John’s to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – in regards to tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays.

“Congratulations to our local Communities in Bloom chairman, Grant Genova and his committee for their support in hosting the judges,” said Councillor Hickman.

Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement.
