City Schedule December Holidays

Due to the upcoming holidays most City offices and facilities are closed;

  • Noon on Friday, Dec. 24, re-opening on Wednesday, Dec. 29
  • Noon on Friday, Dec. 31, re-opening on Tuesday, Jan. 4 

Please note the following exceptions:

  • Access St. John’s is available to residents 24/7; however front counter service is unavailable during times noted above.
  • All City parking by-laws are still in effect. However, paid parking regulations will not be enforced after noon on Friday, Dec. 24; Monday, Dec. 27; Tuesday, Dec. 28; after noon on Friday, Dec 31; and Monday, Jan. 3.
  • Animal Care and Adoption Centre will be providing service on Sunday, Jan. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. Please note visits to the shelter remain by appointment only. Please visit the City website for contact information.
  • The next City Council meeting takes place at 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 10 and the next Committee of the Whole meeting will take place Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 9:30 a.m.
  • The Quidi Vidi dog park and walking trail will be closed due to New Year’s Eve fireworks on Dec. 31 and will reopen on Jan. 1 after the site has been checked and deemed clear. If the fireworks display is postponed until Jan. 1, then the dog park and walking trail will be closed until after it is checked Jan. 2.

All other recreation facilities are closed from noon Friday, Dec. 24 and re-open Tuesday, Jan. 4 with the exception of Kenmount Terrace Community Centre which is opened for scheduled rentals.

Waste Collection
Waste collection calendars were delivered last week, including an update to the schedule for December 2021. There is no interruption to waste collection during the holidays and waste is collected Monday to Friday. Learn your collection schedule and sign up for reminders at curbitstjohns.ca.

A reminder that traditional wrapping paper is not recyclable; for tips on what to recycle and how to reduce your waste during the holidays, please visit curbitstjohns.ca. Residents are reminded that garbage goes in clear bags starting January 3, learn more.

Christmas Tree Drop Off Locations
Only natural, undecorated trees are accepted as they will be mulched for use in landscaping projects in City parks and open spaces. Please do not bundle or tie the tree.

  • Quidi Vidi Lake, large gravel parking lot off The Boulevard; Monday, Dec. 27 to Sunday, Jan. 9; excluding December 31 and January 1 when the parking lot will be closed due to the New Years firework display. If the fireworks display is postponed until January 1, then the parking lot will be closed for the Christmas tree drop off until January 2. 
  • Robin Hood Bay Residential Drop-Off, 340 East White Hills Road, from Wednesday, Dec. 29 to Saturday, Jan 8. Click here for hours of operation. 

The Loop Bannerman Park
The Loop at Bannerman Park is open for the season. Restrictions are in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a maximum of 80 persons for each 50-minute skating session beginning the top of each hour. Proof of vaccination and photo identification are also required. The Loop will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily with the following exceptions:

  • December 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (no ice maintenance at 1 or 4)
  • Christmas Day closed
