City Seeks Proposals for Victoria Street-Area Mural

Wednesday, July 09, 2014 - 9:30 AM

The City of St. John's has begun a search for an artist to design and complete a new mural in the Victoria Street-area of downtown St. John’s.

The mural will be painted on the walls of each side of the steps extending up from Duckworth Street to Victoria Street. The mural will also extend to the Duckworth Street-facing retaining walls, bordering the space currently used by Resource Centre for the Arts for billboard placement. (see site map, attached)

The selected artist will work with a committee of community members, members of the arts community, City council members and staff to fine-tune a concept that will reflect the rich history of performing arts in the area, including the LSPU Hall and Resource Centre for the Arts.

The City has engaged artists to design and complete several murals throughout St. John’s since 2005. Councillor Sandy Hickman, Chair of the City’s Arts Advisory Committee, is pleased that this project will be adding yet more public art to our streets. “These murals showcase our local artists and the heritage of our city, and engage residents and visitors with art,” he said. “They also help make our city more vibrant and have been shown to reduce unwanted vandalism.”

The deadline to submit proposals for the mural project is 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014, with work to be completed over the summer and early fall.

A complete request for proposals package is available on the City’s website in the “Forms” section or by emailing arts@stjohns.ca.
