City Welcomes Three Cruise Ships

Friday, August 30, 2013 - 12:00 PM

Mayor Dennis O’Keefe, Chair of Cruise St. John’s, is pleased to announce the City of St. John’s will be hosting three cruise ships in eight days: Transocean/Premicon’s Astor on Sept. 1, the National Geographic Explorer Lindblad Expedition on Sept. 7 and Holland America’s Eurodam on Sept. 8.

On Sept. 1 the Astor, with 578 passengers and 278 crew, will arrive in St. John’s at 8 a.m. and depart at noon. The ship visits St. John’s following an itinerary with stops in Quebec, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia before travelling to England and finishing in Bremerhaven, Germany. The Astor has visited St. John’s twice before, in 2003 and 2006, and is scheduled to return in 2014.

Saturday, Sept. 7 brings the inaugural visit of the National Geographic Explorer, with 150 passengers and 70 crew, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The expedition cruise is an alliance between National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions.

“For 125 years National Geographic has allowed people to explore the world through its magazines and most recently television shows and website while Lindblad Expeditions has been taking people out into the world to be engaged as explorers,” states Dennis O’Keefe, Chair of Cruise St. John’s. “I am delighted to have this partnership discover and explore our area of the world.”

Following its visit to St. John’s the Explorer travels to the Newfoundland ports of L’Anse aux Meadows and Gros Morne, before sailing on to Quebec and Nova Scotia. The ship returns to St. John’s on Sept. 14 where many passengers will stay overnight before flying home.

On Sunday, Sept. 8 Holland America’s Eurodam, with 2,000 passengers and 800 crew, will make a return visit to the City from noon to 8 p.m. The vessel’s 16-day ‘Viking Passage’ itinerary includes stops in The Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Nova Scotia before stopping in St. John’s and departing for its final destination of New York City. The Eurodam has made several visits to St. John’s in the past and is scheduled to return in 2014.

The full cruise schedule is available on the City's website.
