It is with deep sadness that St. John’s City Council learned of the sudden passing of Paul Pope, a dynamic force in Newfoundland’s film and television industry.

Paul was a founding member of the Newfoundland Filmmaker’s Cooperative (NIFCO). An award-winning producer of such projects as My Left Breast and Rare Birds, he is also producer of the popular current series Hudson and Rex. Paul’s influence on the national entertainment community is immeasurable.

He was a friend of the City of St. John’s. Paul was a key contributor to the City’s 10-year economic plan, Roadmap 2021, and recently brought his fresh and insightful perspective to the development of the economic development framework.   A frequent collaborator on a number of projects with the City, he freely gave of his time to the organization, including being a past member of the City’s Arts Advisory Committee.

In 2021, Paul was the recipient of the 2020 City of St. John’s Legend Award for his contributions to the tourism sector through his 40+ years of work in film, television and arts.

Council extends its deepest sympathies to Paul’s family, friends and colleagues. His contributions are lasting and his loss will be felt by many across the country, but especially here in his hometown.
