Friday, January 14, 2022 - 7:15 AM

On behalf of St. John’s City Council, staff and the residents of St. John’s, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Edward Roberts, former lieutenant-governor and important Newfoundland political figure, on his recent passing.

Mr. Roberts’ legacy is a lasting one, having played a critical role in many important moments in our province’s history. He will be remembered not only for his political contributions but also for his community service and life-long devotion to the province.

As our eleventh lieutenant-governor, Mr. Roberts opened up Government House in a new and modern way, beginning a process that continues to this day.

A lifelong resident of the St. John's area, Mr. Roberts demonstrated a keen interest in municipal matters and did not hesitate to share his opinion and wealth of historic expertise on important City issues.

In tribute to Mr. Roberts, City Hall will fly its flags at half mast, beginning today.
