Today, members of City Council were joined by representatives from the provincial government, Downtown St. John’s, and the George Street Association, to officially declare the Downtown Pedestrian Mall open for the summer season.

“Today, we celebrate the third year of our wonderful and iconic Downtown Pedestrian Mall event, alongside our community, business and government partners,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “It’s the most exciting year yet, as we open up to visitors from around the world and welcome hundreds of people back home for the first time in many years, as part of the 2022 Come Home Year celebration.”

The City has acquired funding from the provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador to host four concerts at the Courthouse on Water Street, as part of the Come Home Year celebration.

“The Downtown St. John’s Pedestrian Mall has been popular with businesses and tourists alike since its inception. Having a Come Home 2022 presence this summer felt like a natural fit, which is why we’re proud to be increasing the presence of pop-up street performances and adding a concert series to the Pedestrian Mall schedule. These performances will add colour and vibrancy to Water Street, while also supporting local artists and musicians.” The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation.

New this year, is the addition of BlindSquare, an accessible navigation and wayfinding tool being piloted at the Downtown Pedestrian Mall.
