The City of St. John’s has started its public engagement process for the Downtown Pedestrian Mall Pilot Project until Oct. 9.

If you are unable to participate online, please call Access St. John’s at 311 or 754-CITY (2489) and ask to speak with someone from the pedestrian mall project team.

On July 3, 2020, the Downtown Pedestrian Mall Pilot Project opened with a goal to stimulate the downtown economy while providing businesses with expanded operating space.

“Public support for the pedestrian mall was tremendous, and we are committed to hosting similar events in the future,” said Councillor Debbie Hanlon, Council lead for Downtown St. John’s. “I encourage everyone, to participate in this important engagement process so that we can improve the experience for future malls.”

On-street interviews have already taken place, with meetings and focus groups currently ongoing with business and stakeholder organizations.

“The engagement process will be critical in helping to determine whether a pedestrian mall in downtown St. John’s is a viable option for the future and, if so, what it should look like in comparison to the pilot project this past summer,” said Byron Murphy, Chair of the Downtown St. John's Business Commission.

The City will collect feedback on what worked well, and what improvements can be made. Ideas that are generated though the public engagement process will help inform a report which will be brought to City Council later this fall, including a ‘What We Heard’ document.
