It’s time for Fire Prevention Week!

From October 3-9, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) is joining forces with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to ask residents to Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety! This message focuses on knowing the sounds of your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarms and what to do upon activation.

“These messages are very important, as these alarms are early warning devices and save lives,” says Captain Gary Power of SJRFD.

The good news is that being aware of these sounds will better prepare your family members in the event of an emergency. This puts the focus on educating children and adults about smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms, their necessity and how the sounds they make help save lives.

Important messages about alarms includes:

Knowing the different sounds alarms make.
Testing your alarms once a month.
Having an emergency evacuation plan and practicing it with your family.
Replacing the batteries regularly.
Knowing when to replace the alarms.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

If the Alarm Sounds:

  • GET OUT AND STAY OUT and have a family meeting place. Never go back inside for people or pets.
  • If you must escape through smoke, GET LOW AND GO under the smoke to your way out.
  • CALL the fire department from outside your home.
