In early January 2021 City Council approved a new, comprehensive Sanitation Regulations Bylaw that outlines the proper disposal of residential waste in St. John’s. These new regulations support and advance Councils strategic goal to divert more waste from the landfill.

For households that do not have a City-issued garbage cart the maximum number of garbage bags that can be put out for collection is now four regular-sized bags.

There is no limit on the number of recycling blue bags that can be placed at the curb for collection.

We anticipate some residents may need a period of adjustment to get used to these new regulations. Our waste staff aim to take an understanding and flexible approach as these regulations are introduced.

Check the Curbit website for garbage collection and recycling details. Waste diversion staff can also help with any recycling or garbage questions: email curbit@stjohns.ca or call Access St. John’s 311 or 754-CITY (2489).
