Improvements to Meters on Harbour Drive

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 - 11:30 AM
Parking meter used in St. John's that accepts credit cards, park cards and coins.

The 10 hour parking meters on Harbour Drive, downtown St. John’s, have been improved to automatically adjust credit for meters in use before, or after, regular weekday hours, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Motorists can now pre-pay for time on the meters, starting as early as 6 a.m., Monday to Friday.  Additionally, if a motorist inserts payment during the daytime, the charge will be automatically adjusted to not exceed 6 p.m., as meters will automatically turn off at that time.

Example Using Coin:

  • When motorists park on Harbour Drive at 7 a.m. and apply a $1 coin to the meter, it will then show time credit of 1 hour and 40 minutes.  The hour, from 7 - 8 a.m. is not charged, and the $1 paid for 40 minutes will begin at 8 a.m.

Example Using Park Card:

  • When motorists park on Harbour Drive at 7 a.m. using a park card, they will see 11 hours of credit, but will only be charged for 10 hours.  The 1 hour from 7 – 8 a.m. is not charged, however the time charged is applied for 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Please note this improvement applies only to the ten hour meters on Harbour Drive.  It is anticipated that all meters in the City will receive the same improvement in the near future.

Frequent users of parking meters are encouraged to purchase Park Cards. Park cards are available for purchase from the Access St. John’s Service Centre on the first floor of City Hall at 10 New Gower Street. Cards can be purchased for any amount between a minimum of $20 and maximum of $100. There is a one-time $2 set-up fee to purchase a park card. There are no additional fees to reload a park card once purchased.
