June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day

The City of St. John’s recognizes June 21, 2022, as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place each year on the summer solstice, June 21. It is an opportunity to learn about the diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of Indigenous People. Learning more and celebrating Indigenous Peoples and culture is one step forward on the path to reconciliation. First Light is a registered non-profit organization in the City of St. John’s that serves the urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous community alike. They provide programs and services rooted in the revitalization, strengthening and celebration of Indigenous cultures and languages in the spirit of trust, respect, and friendship.

Declaration
In September 2020, the City passed a Declaration in Support of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to promote and strengthen mutually respectful relationships with the urban Indigenous community in St. John’s and with all other First Peoples in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The commitment includes Indigenous Culture Diversity Training for City Staff, collaboration with the urban Indigenous community and advocacy for Indigenous rights.
