lawn mower being pushed over fallen leaves, mulching them

Thank you to City residents who participated in the 2014 leaf mulching and curbside collection program. The City is once again encouraging environmentally-friendly uses for fallen leaves.

Your options include:

Mulch them with a mower
This is the most convenient and environmentally sound way to use leaves. Keep the mulch on the lawn, use it in gardens and flower beds or around trees.

Curbside collection

  • If you have too many leaves to mulch put them in paper yard waste bags. There is no limit to the number of paper bags you can place at the curb. Paper bags are collected in separate trucks, composted and used for landscaping projects at Robin Hood Bay. Collection takes place on garbage days from Monday, Oct. 26 to Friday, Nov. 20.
  • If you use plastic garbage bags, these count toward the weekly 10 garbage bag limit. These leaves are treated as garbage, have no further use and go directly in the landfill.

In a backyard compost bin
If you compost, fallen leaves are a great ‘brown’ layer once they are dry.

Drop off
Bring leaves to the Robin Hood Bay Residential Drop Off, 340 East White Hills Road, from Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • If your leaves are in paper yard waste bags you will be directed to a separate bin where they can be placed. These leaves are composted.
  • If you use plastic bags these are treated the same as garbage and go directly in the landfill.

A ‘Buy One, Get One’ coupon for paper yard waste bags redeemable at RONA is available in your fall City Guide, or at stjohns.ca (Quick Links > Garbage and Recycling), or at RONA stores.
