The recently introduced microchip clinic for family pets (cats and dogs) in St. John’s continues in 2017 on the third Wednesday of each month.

“Microchips are permanently implanted in pets and the unique identification number linking to the pet owner’s contact information is stored in a national database,” explains Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth, Chair of Community Services.

The next microchip clinic takes place at the Animal Care & Adoption Centre, 81 Higgins Line, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and appointments can be made online using RECconnect, by calling 576-8499 or by dropping in to the H.G.R. Mews Community Centre.

Each appointment takes approximately 10 minutes at a cost of $35 per animal, payable when the appointment is reserved. To be eligible for microchipping dogs must be licensed with the City of St. John’s; to learn about licensing your dog check our website.

“We want to reunite lost cats and dogs with their owners as soon as possible,” says Ellsworth. “All shelters and veterinary clinics have microchip scanners and when lost pets are brought in, if they are microchipped we can easily retrieve the owners contact information and let them know we have found their pet.”

The City first held a microchip clinic in June 2016, and in October 2016 began offering microchip appointments each month. To date 34 family-owned cats and dogs have been microchipped through this program. In total, 660 pets were chipped through Humane Services in 2016.
