More Pay Stations to be Installed Downtown

This week, the City will begin installing pay stations on Harbour Drive, and throughout the downtown core, in areas that are currently serviced by PayByPhone and Timed Parking. The pay stations are the same model as those that are already in use on Duckworth Street.

Pay stations have multiple payment options including credit cards, debit cards (via the tap function) and mobile payment.

“I am pleased to announce that we have received over 90 new pay stations, and installation throughout the downtown will begin with Harbour Drive,” said Councillor Debbie Hanlon. “As we continue to expand paid parking, motorists are reminded to look for signage when parking and obey the posted time limits.”

As more pay stations are installed, PayByPhone will continue to remain a payment option. Due to the high incidence of vandalism the City has experienced on parking meters in the past, pay stations do not accept cash.

“Our organization has worked diligently with the City to ensure that users of the downtown have consistent and reliable parking options,” said Byron Murphy, Chair of Downtown St. John’s Business Commission. “The additional pay stations will improve access to all businesses in the area for both customers and employees.”

There are several Timed Parking Areas where parking is limited to 15 minutes, two-hour or four-hour-time limit, with no payment required. Areas such as Bishop’s Cove, Beck’s Cove, Clift’s Baird’s Cove, Bates Hill, and Queen Street are currently Timed Parking. With the installment of pay stations and PayByPhone in the coming weeks, payment will be required in these areas. Updated signage will be posted on the street, followed by paid parking enforcement.

Please note that parking is free in designated pay areas after 6 p.m. on weekdays, all day Saturdays and Sundays, and all statutory holidays under the Provincial Shops’ Closing Act.
