National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The City of St. John’s recognizes National Truth and Reconciliation Day. Municipal buildings and facilities will be closed on September 30 to honour survivors, their families and Indigenous communities, and to raise awareness about the legacy of residential schools in Canada.
One year ago, the City passed a Declaration in Support of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to promote and strengthen mutually respectful relationships with the urban Indigenous community in St. John’s and with all other First Peoples in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The commitment includes Indigenous Culture Diversity Training for City Staff, collaboration with the urban Indigenous community and advocacy for Indigenous rights.
What can you do today?
We all have a role to play in advancing truth and reconciliation in our community.
- Wear orange on September 30 or any day to raise awareness and start a conversation about the history of residential schools.
- Educate yourself and others. Below is are lists of books for children and one for adults. There are also links to documentaries, podcasts and websites all of which will help you and your families become informed about the Indigenous story.
- Read the Calls to Action and the City’s own Declaration in Support of the Rights of Indigenous People.
- Make a donation: Donations received by First Light will go towards the development of a Residential School memorial garden at 40 Quidi Vidi Road.
- Use your platform - whether it's at work, at home, or on social media - to educate others about the residential school system & Orange Shirt Day. First Light recommends using part of your day to respect the land and head out for a walk with your friends & family. Use this time to start a conversation about Orange Shirt Day & what it means. Share your stories, photos, and what you're learning by using #OrangeShirtDayNL
