neighbourhood watch awareness day october 7

On Wednesday, Oct. 7 learn more about how you can help protect your neighbourhood by attending the sixth annual Neighbourhood Watch Awareness Day from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Foran/Greene Room, City Hall.

Guest speakers will be on hand to discuss the importance of connections in our neighbourhoods and provide tools for working together to create stronger, safer and more engaged communities within the City of St. John’s.
Neighbourhood Watch is a community-based crime prevention program that has been used internationally to reduce crime by reducing the opportunities for crime to happen. It involves neighbours working together, being alert to suspicious activities and looking out for one another to help create a safer environment for everyone.

The City of St. John’s oversees the program which is supported by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Currently, the City has about 25 active Neighbourhood Watch groups throughout the City, and another 5 groups are in development.

Neighbourhood Watch groups benefit everyone by increasing community connections and contributing to the City’s goal of building strong communities and local neighbourhoods as outlined in the 2015-18 Strategic Plan.
