New Fireworks By-Law starts on New Year’s Eve

A new Fireworks By-Law will come into effect in St. John’s on Friday, December 31. The By-Law states that family fireworks are only allowed on New Year’s Eve and Canada Day from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the following day.

Family fireworks consists of low-hazard fireworks used for recreational use. The goal of the new By-Law is a balanced approach to meet the various needs and wishes of residents and the community.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks Safety Tips

Setting off some family fireworks on New Year’s Eve is a tradition that is still allowed under the new By-Law. With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, we like to share some fireworks safety tips to help you ring in the New year safely:

• Only purchase authorized fireworks that will have a bilingual label on it.
• Use fireworks outdoors only as they are not designed for indoor use.
• Choose a clean and open space to set-off fireworks that is away from buildings, vehicles, public roads, public places and overhead obstruction such as power lines.
• Before you set-off fireworks, please have a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a malfunction or fire. 
• Dispose of used fireworks (including debris) in a pail of water.
• Please keep fireworks away from children under all circumstances.
• Be sure to read all the instructions printed on the fireworks package before use.
