New By-Law Restricts Dates and Times for Fireworks

A new Fireworks By-Law will come into effect on December 31, 2021, which states that family fireworks are only allowed on New Year’s Eve and Canada Day from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the following day.

Family fireworks consists of low-hazard fireworks used for recreational use. All other days and times for family fireworks throughout the year are prohibited unless a Special Event approval is obtained, or on other days that are declared by Council. Any aerial fireworks and pyrotechnics will require a Special Events approval from the City.

The By-Law also sets out rules and restrictions on the way family fireworks can be discharged that include:

• Must be 18 years and older to discharge fireworks
• Cannot throw fireworks in, into, or on buildings, vehicles or public roads, and public places
• Must-have access to a fire extinguisher and bucket of water ready for immediate use
• Need to follow instructions printed on the fireworks package

The By-Law was requested by City Council in response to residents’ concerns about the disruption that fireworks cause, including noise and the impact that fireworks have on animals, people, and property.

The goal of the new By-Law is a balanced approach to meet the various needs and wishes of residents and the community.

Residents can also ring in the New Year at The City of St. John’s public fireworks display that will occur on Friday, December 31 at 8 p.m. over Quidi Vidi Lake. In the case of unsuitable weather for fireworks, they will be postponed to 8 p.m. Saturday, January 1, 2022.
