New Ward Boundaries Announced for 2017 Election

Monday, September 26, 2016 - 5:30 PM

St. John’s City Council has approved new ward boundaries that will come into effect for the 2017 municipal election.

Ward boundaries are reviewed approximately every ten years to equalize ward populations, based on the simplest and most universal principle that elections should give each voter equal representation.

“Since the last review in 2004, areas of the city including Airport Heights, the even side of Logy Bay Road and the city centre have experienced significant population change,” explained Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “These new boundaries equalize representation to more accurately reflect the shifts and growth in our municipality. Ward Four in particular has experienced significant growth and now includes more than 5000 people than the average ward. These new boundaries ensure more equal representation across the entire city.”

Each ward for the 2017 election will now represent approximately 23,000 residents.

“Making the changes now allows time for potential candidates to prepare for and campaign in the ward they will represent after the upcoming municipal election,” said Mayor O’Keefe.

Ward details are available on the City’s website, and the existing ward look-up feature will be revised to reflect any changes as the election nears (see attached ward comparison maps and a listing of streets that will move to a new ward).
